BEIJING -- The number of cardiovascular patients is on the rise in China, with one person dying from related diseases every ten seconds, a report showed on Friday.
On average 9,590 people die from cardiovascular disease each day, according to a report by the National Center for Cardiovascular China.
China has 290 million patients with cardiovascular disease, the report said. There were 230 million patients in 2010.
The report said the increase was due to poor eating habits, smoking, drinking alcohol and a lack of exercise.
The cost of treating heart attacks, brain hemorrhages and stokes has seen an annual increase of 25 percent since 2004. The cost of treating the three diseases topped 46 billion yuan ($7.51 billion) in 2011, according to the report.
The report showed that there were 1,289 hospital discharges of patients with cardiovascular disease in 2011.
The number of discharged patients with the disease saw an annual increase of 9.4 percent from 1980 to 2011, according to the report.
