JAKARTA - As many as 1,505 people have taken shelters at higher grounds as floods hit Aceh Utara district of Indonesia's Aceh province, a government spokesman said in Jakarta Monday.
Due to heavy downpours since Sunday morning, water has overflowed the banks of Pase and Keureten rivers and submerged many places in district, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman of the national disaster agency, told Xinhua by phone.
Evacuation of the flood-affected persons is still underway now, Sutopo said.
Indonesia has frequently hit by floods during the rainy season that usually lasts from November to March every year.
