KABUL - Thousands of supporters of presidential candidate Abdullah Abdullah staged a peaceful demonstration near Arg or Afghan presidential Palace on Friday.

Carrying banners inscribed with slogans "We want transparent elections results,""Our votes must be respected," "Death to those committed fraud in the election process," the protesters gathered in Pashtunistan Square behind the fortified Arg or Afghan Presidential Palace.

Police and personnel of law enforcing agencies cordoned off the area were seen on high alert to deal with any untoward incident.

Abdullah who secured 45 percent of some 7 million votes in April 5 presidential elections against his rival Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai who secured 31.5 percent of the votes has accused the election commission of siding with Ghani Ahmadzai on June 14 runoff, saying he would not accept election commission's decisions unless transparency is guaranteed.
