May 30 to June 3, 1984, Premier Zhao Ziyang visited France. The two governments signed an agreement on mutual encouragement and protection of investments and avoidance of double taxation agreements. The two sides reached an agreement in principle on the construction of the Daya Bay nuclear power plants and telecommunications projects.

June 16-19, 1986, Party Secretary General Hu Yaobang visited France on a wide range of international issues and further development of friendly relations between the two countries.

Nov 7-12, 1987, President Li Xiannian visited France. This was the first Chinese president to visit France. China and France signed a financial protocol on economic and technical cooperation. According to the protocol, France would grant a hybrid loan of 640 million francs to China.
