The Embassy of the Republic of South Africa held a memorial service in Beijing to commemorate Nelson Mandela, the country's former president and anti-apartheid hero.

South African Ambassador to China Dr. Bheki Langa, former Chinese Ambassador to South Africa Liu Guijin and 200 mourners gathered to remember Mandela at the memorial.

A 10-minute video about Nelson Mandela’s life story was shown during the service. Two South African students who studied in China read Nelson Mandela’s quotes to express deep condolences.

Nelson Mandela died on Dec. 5 after battling a recurring lung infection for months. He was South Africa’s first black president and the first fully democratically-elected chief executive and was honored as the father of the nation.
