Charitable organizations should be directly involved in charities, not the government, said a Southern Metropolis Daily article (excerpts below).

The Yunnan provincial government recently suggested that the government withdraw from public charities and drop their participation in donations except in the case of a natural disaster.

If the central government follows suit, it will inject considerable vitality to China's charity drives.

There is a lack of transparency in government charitable organizations and there are many instances of corruption in charitable foundations.

Government-related charitable organizations hold a monopoly over charity efforts and that's the main reason why smaller non-government-related charities are suffering.

Charity drives are crucial in promoting cohesion and morality in society. The abuse of power in charitable efforts is taking a toll on government credibility.
