It has been the government's firm stance that issues over the Diaoyu Islands should be solved through dialogue and negotiations and that Japan must correct its attitude, said an article in People’s Daily (excerpts below).

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said the islands belong to Japan according to both history and international law.

China's determination to defend its sovereignty is firm. The times when the country was bullied have long gone. China has the ability to take necessary action to safeguard its territory and interests.

Japanese politicians attribute the deadlock in relations to the Chinese government's stubborn attitude regarding history.

China is open to talks based on mutual trust and respect. Japan's irresponsible attitude toward history is ruining the foundation for trust and respect.

The international community should be alert to Abe's intention of revising the pacifist constitution of Japan, which is the foundation to restrain Japan from militarizing its self-defense force.

The islands are a card in Abe's hands to realize Japan's military ambition.
