China and the United States launched land-based anti-missile interception technology at almost the same time on Jan 27. India also shot a medium-range ballistic missile on the same day. The changing international landscape demands that China have a strong military to better defend its national interests and world peace, says an editorial in the 21st Century Business Herald. Excerpts:
China will prove to the world a big country's rise can bring peace and stability to the world, despite the country's strong military power. China is regarded by the West as the successor to the Soviet Union. But China has integrated into the global economic system and become a robust engine for world economic growth. There is no reason for China to hold a hostile view on the current order and rules. China is by no means a threat to other countries.
As long as China becomes a responsible country in the international community, China's development will win support and respect. Even if some countries try to contain China for their own interests, this phenomenon will not last long because it goes against the overall trend of the world's development.
Take the US as an example. Even some of its allies participating in its strategy of encircling China are not implementing the strategy wholeheartedly because of their close trade ties with China.
China will not be involved in military competition with other counties. But China will try its best to improve the technological level of its army and transform military technologies for civil uses.
