September 14 marked the 27th anniversary of the sending of the first e-mail from China.
On Sept 14, 1987, a computer laboratory in Beijing successfully sent an e-mail that said, "Across the Great Wall we can reach every corner of the world." The message went to a German university.
Today, China is home to 632 million Internet users, the largest online population in the world. The Internet Society of China, in an open letter marking the anniversary, urged users to take responsibility for the web and work jointly to ensure its healthy development.
