China Daily wins two media awards

Vincent Fan (L), deputy general manager of China Daily UK company, receives international media award - Plain English Campagin, on Dec 9, in Liverpool, UK.

LONDON - China Daily European Weekly won two international media awards this week.

Celebrating its avoidance of gibberish and its remarkable circulation and development, the two awards came from the Plain English Campaign and the Association of Circulation Executives (ACE) respectively.

It is the first time that a Chinese media has won the awards.

Plain English Campaign gave the newspaper an International Media Award for its "clear communication of business news to a global audience."

This makes China Daily one of the eight media winners announced on Friday, marking the Campaign's 32nd awards ceremony held in the UK city of Liverpool, alongside with other prizes for the best and worse use of the English language.

Chrissie Maher, founder of Plain English Campaign said: "The language of commerce can be very complicated, especially for new business people. And yet clear communications are at the heart of every successful organization. We don't need useless management-speak like 'blue-sky thinking'. We do need clear and accurate information, and this is what we find in China Daily. A newspaper that brings business into our daily lives in a way that is easy to read and understand for a wide and varied audience."

Plain English Campaign is an independent, self–funding pressure group based in New Mills, High Peak in the UK. Since its beginnings in 1979 it has grown to become the biggest plain language group in the world, aiming at persuading UK and worldwide organizations to communicate with the public in plain language.

It fights bureaucratic language, small print and the legalese of official information. It promotes the use of plain language by presenting awards, hosting international conferences and funding research projects.

China Daily European Weekly was launched in the UK and continental Europe in December last year.

It now covers 38 countries in Europe.

It was awarded the "Launch of the Year" award on Tuesday by the ACE. "China Daily – a terrific long-term commitment to international circulation with an integrated strategy to develop sales," commented the ACE.

ACE, conceived 60-years-ago, was an exclusive‘closed' organization for newspaper and magazine circulation and distribution directors, and their managers.

ACE is today best known for its educational initiatives and the Press and International Awards.

The 2011 ACE International Circulation and Distributor Awards were held at St Luke's – in the home of the London Symphony Orchestra – in celebration of all that is great and good in the publishing industry.
