Egypt's military to announce important statement

CAIRO - The Supreme Council of Egypt's armed forces is holding a meeting under Hussein Tantawi, the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces and Minister of Defense, and will issue an important statement, said Egyptian TV on Friday.

The statement is expected to be announced before Friday prayers, Al-Arabiya TV reported.

The military supreme council issued its No 1 statement late Thursday after a meeting. The statement said the council "decided to remain in continuous session to consider what procedures and measures that may be taken to protect the nation and aspirations of Egyptian people."

In his third televised speech Thursday night since the mass protests began on January 25, the Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak said he delegated powers to his deputy Omar Suleiman according to the constitution and vowed to conduct more constitutional reforms.
