The Deputy Secretary General of the Union, Abid Briki said that the withdrawal is justified by the presence of some 12 cabinet members belonging to the former ruling Democratic Constitutional Rally (RCD).

Hundreds of demonstrators protesting against the presence of the RCD in the national unity government clashed with police in Tunis, Sfax, Gabes, Bizerta, Sousse and Monastir. More demonstrations are planned during the day.

On Monday, Prime Minister Mohammed Ghannouchi announced the makeup of the national unity government which included former ministers, independents and members of the opposition.
