Seoul nominates new Army chief after scandal

SEOUL - The Republic of Korea (ROK)'s Third Army commander Gen. Kim Sang-ki was nominated as the new Army chief, the defense ministry said Wednesday.

Kim, if approved by the Cabinet, will replace Gen. Hwang Eui-don, who stepped down Tuesday following a controversy over alleged illicit property purchase he made in 2002.

Lt. Gen. Lee Hong-ki, director of the operations bureau at Joint Chiefs of Staff, was named commander of the Third Army.
