China's telecom sector reports moderate earnings

BEIJING -- China's telecommunications service rose 20.5 percent year-on-year to 3.1 trillion yuan ($470.57 billion) in 2010 despite an overall price decrease of 11.7 percent, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) said Wednesday.

Main business revenues surged 6.4 percent year-on-year to 898.8 billion yuan in 2010 while fixed assets investment fell 14.2 percent to 319.7 billion yuan, said the MIIT in an online statement.

Further, telephone subscribers increased 8.71 percent from 2009 to 1.15 billion in 2010, with fixed phone users shrinking 6.17 percent to 294.38 million and mobile phone users jumping 14.96 percent to 859 million, it said.

Of every 100 people, 64.4 were using cell phones in 2010, compared with 56.3 users in 2009 as China's 3G phone subscribers almost tripled to hit 47.05 million, it noted.

By the end of 2010, optical cable transmission lines had increased 20.02 percent year-on-year to 9.95 million kilometers, with telephone and internet services covering all administrative villages. Also, remote villages in 19 provinces had access to telephones, the statement added.
