China developing own operating system to challenge Microsoft

China is developing its own operating system similar to Microsoft Corp's Windows for personal computer makers and national defense, said Bloomberg News on Friday, citing reports from a local newspaper in Shanghai.

The application will "improve information technology security level for China", said Chen Ying, a software division director of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the report said.

According to the report, the operating system will be developed by China Standard Software, a Shanghai-based company.
