TEHRAN - At least 15 people were killed in a car accident in Isfahan province in central Iran, the state IRIB TV reported on Thursday.

In the accident that took place in the early hours of Thursday, four car collided on a road leading to Naeen city and three of them caught fire, traffic police officer Colonel Gholami was quoted as saying.

In the incident, 15 people were killed, said the police officer, adding that 11 of the killed people were Afghani nationals, and that eight others, two Afghanis and six Iranians, were injured.

The high speed of one of the cars carrying the Afghani nationals was the cause of the accident, Colonel Gholami noted.

In September, 40 people were killed in a car accident in Tehran- Qom highway in northern Iran.

Official figures show that more than 20,000 people died and 200, 000 others were wounded in traffic accidents annually in Iran. Inexperienced drivers and low-efficiency of the cars and the roads are blamed for causing these accidents.
