BEIJING - Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei confirmed Thursday that around 70 Chinese citizens who were arrested by Nigeria's immigration authority have been released.
Hong said at a regular press conference in Beijing that around 100 Chinese citizens were arrested by Nigeria's immigration service on Tuesday for illegally living and working in the country.
The Chinese Embassy in Nigeria and General Consulate in Lagos have paid great attention to the incident and made prompt inquiries concerning the case, Hong said, adding that members of the embassy have visited the arrested Chinese.
Hong said China has urged Nigeria to handle the case carefully according to law and the Chinese embassy would continue to offer consular assistance to those who may face repatriation.
"The Chines side will work closely with their Nigerian counterparts to help resolve the case," Hong added.
