JOHANNESBURG - Heavy rains have caused flooding and disruption in South Africa's famous Kruger National Park, Beeld newspaper in Johannesburg reported on Wednesday.

South African National Parks (SANParks) issued an urgent warning that certain gates and roads in the park have been closed as a result.

The 21,497 square kilometer park is a major attraction for foreign visitors to South Africa. The three entrance gates closed are Phalaborwa, Crocodile Bridge and Giriyondo border post.

In addition, the Biyamiti Bush Camp, Shimuwini Bush Camp, Talamati Bush Camp and Tshokwane picnic site have also been closed.

In a media statement, SANParks said the Tinga Private Lodge is being evacuated and guests on the Sweni Wilderness Trail have already been evacuated.

On Wednesday a SANParks helicopter was being used for evacuations where necessary.

SANParks warned that the roads between Letaba and Olifants and Letaba and Phalaborwa are not accessible, and all gravel roads and low level bridges must be avoided.

Letaba camp is without electricity as the generator room flooded.

The causeway on the tar road between Skukuza and Malelane/Pretoriuskop at Delaporte Waterhole was flooded.

Olifants and Letaba camps could not be accessed on Wednesday.
