Comment on "Shrimps injected with gelatin found in N China" (China Daily website, Feb 15)
I think Chinese law is too merciful in punishing food safety-related criminals. In this way the consumers' health and life have been ignored. Severe punishment is necessary to deter offenders. I hope authorities can pay more attention to food safety issues.

Although gelatin is a food additive that has been used for years, this kind of behavior should also be considered fraud. Vendors are cheating consumers into thinking they are getting bigger and meatier shrimps, while in fact they are not. Authorities should fine them and suspend their business licenses or even put them in prison if they cause serious harm to the public.
