Happy Girls contestant picked for online drama

Zeng Yike, a contestant on the popular TV competition Happy Girls, will soon embark on an acting career.

The 21-year-old will lead the cast of Hello Summer, an online drama produced by Sohu.com, Hunan TV and EE Media.

The eight-episode romantic comedy features many young talents who first appeared in singing contests such as Happy Girls and Happy Boys. Among them is Chen Xiang, winner of the 2010 Happy Boys and Liu Xijun, winner of the 2009 Happy Girls.

Zeng rose to fame in the 2009 Happy Girls through her talent for songwriting, although she went no further than the final 10.

The drama is in production now and will be shown on the video channel of Sohu.com.

Focus on quality in Chinese wine industry

Local and international wine experts discussed ways to improve quality in the Chinese wine industry recently in Beijing. The event entitled "Opening the Door to Wine Quality Improvement in China" was held at the Top Wine 2011 Trade Show, organized jointly by Wine in China and Normacorc, the world's leading producer of alternative wine closures.

According to Nasr Nagib, Nomacorc's vice-president, the company produces 10 million corks a year, accounting for 13 percent of the worldwide output of wine bottle corks. China's grape and wine production has been rising steadily, from 200,000 tons of output in 2000 to 1.88 million tons in 2010, according to You Yilin, doctorate student at the Wine Technology Development Center, China Agriculture University.

Song-and-dance gala celebrates soldiers

A grand song-and-dance show, I Am A Soldier, premiered recently in Beijing's China Theater, to celebrate the upcoming 90th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China.

Featuring the Shenyang Song and Dance Ensemble, which has staged scores of large-scale operas, it tells the story of 12 soldiers and their heroic deeds. The show features Lei Feng (1940-62), a young solider who devoted himself to serving the people and became a household name for his selflessness, modesty and dedication, and Dong Cunrui (1929-48), who sacrificed his young life during the civil war.
