Oscar-nominated British director Peter Yates, probably best known for his 1968 cop drama "Bullitt" starring Steve McQueen, has died, his agent said on Monday. He was 81.

Nominated in the best director and best picture categories both for cycling story "Breaking Away" and backstage drama "The Dresser," Yates passed away on Sunday, according to a statement from Judy Daish Associates.

He is survived by his wife Virginia and two children. A small private funeral is planned, followed by a memorial service.
