Originating in North China in the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) and often spoken in Mandarin, cross talk was brought to Guangdong province in 1958 and popularized through being spoken in Cantonese, the local dialect. Huang Junying is the man who made this happen.
The father of Cantonese cross talk has been performing for the past 60 years. Huang is still the best selling Cantonese cross talk performer. His fans have the opportunity to have a good laugh enjoying Huang's classic and latest talks at the gala on Aug 24 and 25 celebrating the 60 anniversary of Huang's career as a Cantonese opera and cross talk artist.
Huang's former partner, Yang Da, will reunite with his old friend to give a talk on the stage. Liang Yurong, a famous Cantonese opera singer will present the theme song together with Huang to open the gala show.
8 pm, Aug 24 and 25. Friendship Theater, 696 Renmin Beilu, Yuexiu district, Guangzhou. 020-8666-8991.
