BEIJING - China on Tuesday condemned a bomb attack in Egypt that has left at least 14 dead and more than a hundred others wounded.

"China opposes and condemns the terrorist violence against civilians and government agencies in Egypt," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying told a regular press briefing.

The explosion occurred at the local police headquarters in Egypt's Nile Delta city of Mansoura early Tuesday morning amid domestic political tensions.

"We holds that Egypt's affairs should be decided by the Egyptian people independently," Hua said.

She said China hopes Egypt will resume normal social order, push forward its inclusive political transition process and achieve national stability and development at an early date.

Egyptian interim Prime Minister Hazem el-Beblawi has said the bombing is a hideous terrorist attack aimed at threatening the people and the implementation of the transition roadmap.

Tensions have been running high in Egypt since the fall of former Islamist President Mohamed Morsi in early July, with a string of bomb attacks taking place across the country.
