Russian melody

The 80-year-old Alexander Red-Flag Song and Dance Troupe of the Russian Armed Forces is an old friend of Chinese audiences. On the 90th anniversary of the founding of Communist Party of China (CPC), the troupe pays its ninth visit to the country. Programs cover choruses, orchestras and dances with an authentic Russian flavor. The performers will also present Chinese folk songs such as Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and Song of the Great Man.

Harbin, the music city

Harbin, with its bitterly cold winters, is often labeled the Ice City. In 2010, however, it was named Music City by UNESCO for its unique musical heritage. On Oct 10, more than 100 singers will hold a symphony orchestra concert, The Rhythm of Songhua River, in Beijing. Featuring singers such as Zheng Xulan, Mu Xuanpu and Yin Xiumei, the concert will include Chinese folk songs and eight new compositions by musicians Wang Xiaoling and Yin Qing.

Auction preview

The preview of a charity auction is on at Guocuiyuan Art Center.

On display are more than 100 ceramic works created by disabled artists from Jingdezhen, Jiangxi province, a city known for producing porcelain works since ancient times. Also displayed are works by master ceramicists such as Wang Xiliang and Zhou Guozhen. All exhibits will go under the hammer on Sept 24 on the fourth floor of Building 1 at Guicuiyuan Art Center. The proceeds will be used for a fund to train disabled persons in ceramic art.

Tibetan scenesAn ongoing exhibition of oil paintings features scenes of the Tibet autonomous region. On display are 124 works from 28 artists across the country, including 10 Tibetan artists. Most of the works are landscapes and portraits. Many of the paintings are based on trips made by the painters to Xigaze prefecture, Nyingchi prefecture, and Lhasa in April this year.

Veteran woman artist

A retrospective solo show of veteran woman artist Xiao Shufang (1911-2005) is being held at National Art Museum of China. Co-organized by Chinese Artists Association, Central Academy of Fine Arts and Wu Zuoren International Art Foundation, the exhibition will display more than 100 of paintings, photos and documents that chronicle Xiao's artistic career - from her childhood training in fine arts and early artworks to her dramatic change in style after 1949.

Group show

The Gallery of the National Library is holding a group exhibition titled, Dialogue of Art and Civilization. On view are more than 50 oils, sketches, watercolors, calligraphy works and inks, by French artist Michel King and a dozen Chinese artists.
