French police officer Daniel Nivel is beaten by German fans after a match between Germany and Yugoslavia during the 1998  World Cup in France, June 21, 1998. Nivel was seriously injured to the point of brain damage. A German fan was arrested and charged with attempted murder and in 1999, with four more Germans, they were sentenced to between three and 10 years in prison for attempted murder and causing grievous bodily harm. In 2001, Markus Warnecke, the German fan accused of leading the attack, was found guilty and jailed for five years and banned from France for 10 years, and from all sports facilities for five years.
