Chinese diver Qiu Bo made amends for the disappointment of missing out on Olympic gold last year to retain his world title in the men's 10m platform final on Sunday.
Qiu produced a near flawless display to finish well clear on 581 points with American Olympic champion David Boudia in second on 517.40 points and Germany's Sascha Klein back in third on 508.55.
However, there was disappointment for Britain's Tom Daley as he was hampered by a torn tricep and could finish only sixth.
It was sweet revenge for Qiu, who was surprisingly edged off the top of the podium in London by Boudia, as his victory meant China finished the diving meet with nine out of a possible 10 golds.
"In London, I was defeated by a small margin, but it doesn't mean it was a failure. I was able to rebound and train harder since then," he said.
"I felt a bit tired going into this final after the semifinals, but at the end of the day, I could perform well and get the gold."
Boudia was powerless to stop Qiu's march to gold despite leading for the first two rounds, but was still solid throughout as he picked up a second consecutive world championship silver medal.
And he admitted his eye may have been taken off the ball slightly since success in London.
"Diving is my hobby, but it's also my job. It's what I do, but it's not who I am," he said.
"Since London, I got married and I finished many other things I had pending. I had other priorities, and now I am back to my job."
However it was a difficult day for Olympic bronze medalist Daley as two poor dives in the final two rounds saw him fall from third down to sixth.
And the Englishman revealed after that he had torn a tricep for the third time during Saturday's semifinals.
"I've had a scan and I've torn my tricep again, I can't straighten the arm, which makes it hard when entering the water. It's the third time I have done it," he said.
"It normally takes 10 weeks of rehab before I can get back in the water again, but I had 24 hours after doing it yesterday.
"It got more painful as the competition went on."
Daley's struggles opened the way for Klein to move into the bronze medal position and ensure that the top three from the world championships two years ago finished in the same order as in Shanghai.
"The best thing is that I have won two medals at world championships this year, one gold and one bronze, and I'm so happy I still can't believe it," said the German after he took gold with partner Patrick Hausding in the 10m synchronized platform earlier in the week.
"Before the last round it was really close and I knew I had to do a very good dive and, thankfully, I did it."
