Jean-Paul Gaultier has designs on China

BEIJING -- The French fashion brand Jean-Paul Gaultier has launched its fourth boutique store in China.

The 180-square-meter shop is in Beijing Shin Kong Place. It features Jean-Paul Gaultier’s most important collections, including ready-to-wear men, women swear, accessories and footwear.

T-shirts can cost as much as 5,000 yuan ($785), and a coat as much as 50,000 yuan.

The Chinese luxury market has grown rapidly as the ranks of the country’s wealthy swell, and ever more global brands are setting up shop in China or increasing their presence here.

To celebrate the latest Jean-Paul Gaultier opening, the store restaged its spring 2012 show with Chinese models.

Gaultier, 59, was the creative director of Hermès from 2003 to 2010. His name also appears on a range of perfumes.

The label plans more boutique stores in China.
