The 'America's Got Talent' presenter and the 43-year-old singer - who tied the knot in 2008 - were drawn to each other after discovering they shared the same views and values in life.
Speaking to Ebony magazine, Nick said: "It was early on when I found out how spiritual she was, and we had conversations about kids and how to live life.
"For her to share these values, it instantly let me know this is the person I've always wanted."
The couple have two-year-old twins Moroccan and Monroe together, and Nick is adamant he doesn't want his children to grow up on television unless they really have the desire to do so.
He explained: "Me personally, I wouldn't put my kids on television. But as easy as it is for me to say that ... if I saw that they really really wanted to and they had the drive, then I would fully support it.
"As long as there's balance at home, then they could do whatever they wanted to do."
Nick previously admitted having children had changed his relationship with Mariah, bringing them even closer than before.
He said: "We are parents now - it's a whole different dynamic in the household. It solidifies what a family is all about."
