Jiangnan Shipyard, Shanghai
Hailed as "the first factory of China", Jiangnan Shipyard dates back to 1865 when its predecessor, the Jiangnan General Manufacturing Bureau, was born among the earliest industrial enterprises in China.
For nearly 150 years, Jiangnan Shipyard has manufactured China's submarines, naval frigates, space-tracking ships and more, making it a key player in the watercraft industry and national defense.
However, the shallow Huangpu River and the low bridges across it gradually confined the yard's development. In 2004, it was designated as a site for the Expo 2010 and for a series of industrial museums thereafter.
The ship manufacturer was relocated to its 560-hectare new base on Changxing Island nearby in 2006.
