Airport releases information on stabbing suspect

Lanzhou Zhongchuan Airport authorities released information on a suspect on Tuesday who stabbed three security guards at the airport on Monday.

The statement released by the airport on Tuesday said the man, Zhang Pengfei, is a boiler worker in a rare earth factory in Baiyin city, Gansu province. He was born on Sept 8, 1988.

Zhang arrived at the airport by taxi at about 9:12 am on Monday and later asked an airport worker when was the next flight to Beijing.

Learning the next flight was at 10:10 am, Zhang tried to rush through a security check at about 9:20 am, wielding a 20-centimeter knife. The three security guards tried to control Zhang and he stabbed all three, causing serious head injuries to two and slightly hurting the third. 

Airport authorities said no ticket information was recorded for Zhang.

Police are continuing to investigate the attack with no motives or further details released on Tuesday.
