A Party discipline inspection official suspected of accepting more than 10 million yuan ($1.61 million) in bribes asked judges to sentence him to 10 years in prison during a court hearing in Shaoguan, Guangdong province, on Wednesday, Guangzhou-based New Express Daily reported.

Wu Hanlin was charged with taking 10.25 million yuan, plus 220,000 Hong Kong dollars ($28,350), in bribes in seven separate cases from local real estate developers.

Prosecutors confiscated 6.32 million yuan of Wu's illegal income and two luxury cars he purchased with the bribe money. Wu was detained and removed from his post in February.

Prosecutors asked judges to sentence Wu, who is from Meizhou, to life in jail because of the large size of the bribes he accepted.

The court has not reached a verdict in the case.
