Solar Decathlon China will challenge 20 Chinese and international university teams to design and build innovative solar-powered homes that are affordable and energy-efficient.

The competition — founded by Applied Materials in partnership with China's National Energy Administration, Peking University and the US Department of Energy — will run through Aug 11 in Datong, Shanxi province. It is modeled after the Solar Decathlon, launched by the US Energy Department to promote innovation in the industry.

The idea for the Solar Decathlon China originated in January 2011 as the result of a Sino-US agreement to improve economic and environmental conditions in both countries and around the world.

Applied Materials played an important role in helping design and implement the program as a long-time supporter of the Solar Decathlon and sponsor of past competitions and teams in 2005, 2009 and 2011.

"The future of how people will live in China and around the world can be seen in the solar-powered houses on display during this competition," said Joe Pon, vice-president of communications and public affairs at Applied Materials.
