The Kunming Administration of Industry and Commerce denied rumors that the Yunnan provincial capital has banned sales of white shirts and T-shirts.
In a notice published on its official website on Wednesday, the administration said it did not issue notices banning sales of white shirts and T-shirts in the city.
The administration urged its subordinates to notify police if they find out who spread the rumors.
Over the past few weeks, rumors have been circulating claiming the city's administration of industry and commerce has banned sales of the white shirts and T-shirts citywide to prevent residents from protesting a local petrochemical project.
The rumors also claimed the ban was to ensure social order during the upcoming China-South Asia Fair.
Jointly organized by the Ministry of Commerce and Yunnan provincial government, the China-South Asia Fair will take place in Kunming from June 6 to 10. It is regarded as an important international event that can help raise the reputation of Kunming and Yunnan province.
