XI'AN - Hundreds of people toppled police and government cars on Friday to vent their anger over a road accident that killed a girl in Xi'an, the capital of Northwest China's Shaanxi province.

Four vehicles, including two police cars, a patrol vehicle and a government car, were overturned by the crowd of people, according to eyewitnesses.

A young girl was run over and killed by a truck in downtown Xi'an at about 5:40 pm. Witnesses said local police took more than two hours to arrive at the scene. After their arrival, agitated onlookers attacked the police and overturned the cars.

The site has since been cordoned off and more than 700 policemen were dispatched to disperse the crowd.

The driver of the truck has been detained for questioning.

Traffic in the area was partially resumed by 10:20 pm, shortly after the girl's body was removed. Most of the people had left the site by 11 pm.
