The college acceptance rate in Beijing rose to a record high of 86 percent this year as the number of applicants in the capital decreased for the fifth consecutive year, Beijing Daily reported citing the city's Municipal Commission of Education.

Last year the figure was 84.6 percent.

Among junior college applicants, only 500 failed to pass the admission mark, and 7,000 of those who passed declined the offer to take next-year's entrance test in order to get a better score and the chance at a "good university".

Among undergraduate applicants, 39,590 were admitted which pushes this year's undergraduate acceptance rate to a record high of 55.8 percent, one point higher than that of last year.

In total, around 76,000 people in Beijing applied for colleges this year, over 4,000 less than last year, when college applicants shrank by 20 percent than the year before.
