More than 100 people from a village in Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region have been imprisoned for robbery.

Wenjiang village has a population of 3,000 and most of the adults leave to work in neighboring Guangdong province. More than 100 of them have been severely punished for committing robberies in the province.

Most young people in the village leave after they finish primary school to become migrant workers in cities like Shenzhen. Many resort to robbery when they realize they can only find low-paid, unpleasant jobs.

Many children in Wenjiang are like Xiaofeng, 6, who now lives with his grandparents.

Xiaofeng's father and uncle have been sentenced to 15 years and life in prison after being members of a gang of thieves. His mother also left the boy after his father was arrested.

"Many migrant workers go to big cities and often resort to their relatives, friends and fellow villagers to look after their children," said Jin Gaofeng, a legal expert.

"If there is a crime group that offers them some help, they will join it."
