Due to growing demands for international LCD computer screens, the Central Taiwan Science Park, decided to expand its operation in Changhua county's Erlin township. Building on sugar cane fields the expansion was slated to also destroy the Siangsihliao community. But after intervention by the "supreme administrative court" it was agreed that the main community would be saved.

However the court agreement did not include small farmsteads outside the main village like that of Chen Zheng-Zong, whose family had lived there for 100 years.
