GENEVA - The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) will participate in the Nanjing 2014 Summer Youth Olympic Games (YOG) Culture and Education Programme (CEP), said IFRC on Thursday.
The organization would join nearly 3,800 young athletes around the world through the program at the second edition of summer YOG from Thursday to Aug 28 when the games are scheduled to be concluded.
As an intrinsic feature of the YOG, the program - with one focus on Social Responsibility - provides the young athletes an opportunity to engage in activities addressing global issues, inspiring them to become responsible role models in their communities, as it was introduced.
IFRC noted that during the two-week-long gathering, it will host daily walk-in booth activities and five educational workshops in the Youth Olympic Village with varied themes ranging from humanitarian values, road safety, first aid and youth as agents of behavioral change.
The YOG are an elite sporting event aimed to bring together young athletes aged from 15 to 18 worldwide, which also integrate a unique Culture and Education Programme which is based around five main themes: Olympism, Social Responsibility, Skills Development, Expression and Well-being and Healthy Lifestyles.
The Summer YOG feature over 3,500 athletes and are held over a 12-day period. The first summer edition was held in Singapore in August 2010.
