"I think the Olympic Park is incredible and I am delighted that I have been involved from the very beginning," said the 35-year-old who played a high profile role in the bid to bring the Games to London as an ambassador.

"The area I know so well is being transformed, the amazing dream is becoming a reality and I have seen first-hand how much hard work has gone into the project. This is great for the East End and for sport."

Sebastian Coe said, "David has been, and continues to be, an integral part of the London 2012 family, playing a key role in the bid and being part of our handover show in Beijing.

"I was delighted to be able to show him around the site, which of course is in a part of London he knows well. His belief and support is well known and he was thrilled to see the progress being made."

The former England captain is also an ambassador on behalf of England's 2018 bid team. He will go to Zurich to help secure the World Cup ahead of the vote on Dec 2.
