Comment on "Will China excel US in 2016?" (China Daily, May 11)

Many Chinese assume two things. China will become one of the leading countries in the world and that will happen soon.

Unfortunately both assumptions may be wrong. China has a huge population and the path to success is long and tortuous. It has many domestic problems and faces external challenges, too.

The Chinese leadership will need all the wisdom and strength to guide the country through the storm yet to come. The Western media are still very critical of China, reflecting the West's doubts about its rise. Thus, China's development road will be bumpy.
