Dec 12 saw the grand opening of the first Asian Para Games in Guangzhou. The theme of the Para Games, "we cheer, we share, we win", is different from that of the 16th Asian Games, which was held in the same city last month. The Para Games' theme encourages and celebrates the participation of all rather than focusing on the winners.

At the opening ceremony, the modern dance recital by physically challenged performers touched the hearts of the thousands who were present in the stadium and the millions who watched it on TV screens. The highlight of the ceremony was the last leg of the torch relay. Two athletes (rock climbers) supporting each other carried the torch forward.

The Para Games reminds us that there are a lot of people out there who deserve our patience and care, that we can make the world a much better place by being more understanding, that we can brighten the day for others by lending a helping hand.

The grit and determination of the athletes at the Para Games teach us to do all the above and a little more.
