Police spokesman Magomed Tagirov said late Wednesday that the car was parked by Karavan cafe in the city of Khasavyurt. All of the people killed or injured were inside the cafe.

Police investigators were on the scene.

Russia is on edge following an apparent suicide bombing at Moscow's largest airport that killed 35 people.

No one has claimed responsibility for the airport attack, but suspicion has fallen on Islamic militants from the Caucasus, a region that includes Chechnya and Dagestan.

Dagestan sees nearly daily attacks, most of which target police or security officials.
