One of the fair's board members, Wang Huangsheng, director of CAFA Art Museum in Beijing, is presenting an exhibition of Contemporary Chinese Photography at Minsheng Art Museum in Shanghai featuring photo art in China from 2009 to the present.
According to Wang, China's public museums didn't start to systematically make collections of photography until 2003, when Guangdong Art Museum hosted a large photo exhibition "Documenting China".
"China's market for photo art is far from being established," Wang says. Contemporary Chinese photography may become a new hot spot for art collectors. "That's its advantage and disadvantage, its risk and opportunity."
By presenting large numbers of fine photographs represented by world-famous galleries, Photo Shanghai will help the Chinese public to understand photography and its culture in the long run, he says.
