Shanghai metro pilots QR code payment

Xinhua | Updated: 2017-10-31 09:36

SHANGHAI -- Shanghai began to allow QR code payment for its maglev train service, aiming at spreading the payment method to the whole subway network by early 2018.

Shanghai Shentong Metro Group, operator of the Shanghai metro, said Monday the new payment method would first be available at two stations on the maglev line.

After downloading a mobile app, subway passengers can pay for their tickets via Alipay or China UnionPay simply by scanning the QR code at the entrance and exit.

"Unlike traditional online payment, the Shanghai metro has adopted innovative technology that can function without a wireless network. Therefore, it is not time-consuming to open the app and wait for a response," said Wang Ziqiang, an operation management executive.

The app also offers services including information on food and shopping. The app will launch an English version early next year.
