BEIJING - China has maintained close contact and consultation with relevant sides in order to ease tensions on the Korean Peninsula and realize its peace and stability, a Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said at a Wednesday press briefing.
Spokeswoman Hua Chunying's remarks came after Park Geun Hye, president of the Republic of Korea (ROK), said Tuesday that China should exercise more of its leverage over the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and instruct the country to choose the right path for peace on the Korean Peninsula.
The Chinese side has always taken a just, objective and responsible attitude in tackling issues concerning regional security and stability, Hua said, noting that China believes in maintaining peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, realizing denuclearization on the peninsula and resolving relevant issues through dialogue and consultation.
As the current situation on the Korean Peninsula remains complex and sensitive, all relevant parties should play a positive role in defusing the situation, she added.
Hua said the ROK-US alliance is a bilateral arrangement formed under a specific historical background.
"We hope the development of relevant bilateral relations can play a constructive role in maintaining peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula," Hua said.
