CHENGDU - At least 13 people have died and 10 others are missing in rain-triggered flooding in southwest Sichuan province as of 1 pm Monday, the local government said.

All the deaths were reported in Bazhong city, which was battered by torrential rain on Sunday, the provincial flood control office said in a statement.

In Nanjiang county, six people died and nine went missing on Sunday in a rain-triggered landslide, it said.

Neighboring Tongjiang county reported five deaths and one missing. In Bazhou district, two people died in the flood-triggered disasters, the document said.

Rescuers are searching for the missing.

Torrential rain has swollen the local Qujiang River, a tributary of the Jialing River that feeds the Yangtze, China's longest waterway. More than 600,000 people were evacuated in Dazhou and Guang'an cities ahead of what was expected to be the worst flood since records began in 1847.
