DALIAN -- All 12 workers who were trapped by a tunnel cave-in in northeast China's Liaoning Province on Monday have been pulled out alive as of 4:10 p.m. Tuesday, rescuers and witnesses said.

The 12 workers are in stable condition after being trapped for 36 hours. The tunnel was under construction when it collapsed Monday morning in Dalian, a coastal city in Liaoning.

The workers were pulled out through a rescue duct that was completed early Tuesday morning, rescuers said.

Some of the workers even enjoyed a cigarette after being received by a joyous crowd, witnesses said. They were then sent to a local hospital for treatment.

Food, water and mobile phones were sent down to the workers during their ordeal via ventilation holes that were dug on Monday, rescuers said.
