Images of people drinking will be deleted from a TV drama before it is broadcast in East China’s Anhui province, the Shanghai Morning News reported on Friday.

ANTV, the provincial television station of Anhui province, said it will cut out some drinking shots or use mosaic or blurred pictures in the new teleplay edition of Water Margin, one of the four great classical novels of Chinese literature, to avoid promoting alcohol, the paper said.

Many male audiences criticized the decision, saying it removed the essential spirit of the macho novel, such as the story of Wu Song, who killed a tiger with his bare hands after consuming 18 bowls of wine in one go.

Water Margin details the trials and tribulations of 108 outlaws during the Song Dynasty (960-1279) of Chinese history.
