Drug trafficker wanted for murder arrested from hotel

Police in Puyang, Henan province, recently arrested a suspected drug trafficker who was wanted by the Hubei police in a murder case.

The accused allegedly stole 10 million yuan ($1.5 million) from other drug dealers before fleeing to Puyang in September.

On Oct 10, he was shot and injured by the drug trafficking gang.

The police traced his whereabouts when he checked into a Puyang hotel on Oct 28 and broke into his room while he was asleep.

Details of his involvement in the Hubei murder case were not revealed.

Doctors remove nail from 15-year-old boy's stomach

Doctors at a hospital in Xinyang, Henan province, recently operated upon a 15-year-old boy to remove a nail that had been in his stomach for four years.

Yang Yang, 15, swallowed a steel nail by mistake in 2006, but was afraid to tell his mother because his father had recently passed away.

Yang only told his mother of the nail in his stomach late last month and was immediately rushed to a hospital.

Doctors found that the nail was lodged in Yang's bronchus.

Yang underwent the knife last week and is recovering well, doctors said.

Accountant loses job over QQ status message

An accountant in Changsha, capital of Hunan province, recently lost her job after she wrote, "At work, but not much to do," on her QQ (a Chinese instant messaging program) status column.

Four days after she posted the message, her manager called her to his office and asked her to pack up her stuff and leave.

'University junior' reveals she is 40 after hubby abuses

A woman in Zhengzhou, capital of Henan province, who claimed to be a college student and married a 23-year-old man turned out to be in her 40s.

The woman met her husband, who is from Suiyang county, in March, and told him she was a junior at a university in Zhengzhou.

In August, the two got married, but she did not let her husband meet her family, which made him suspicious.

On Oct 27, the woman went to the police to report her husband for "mistreating" her and revealed she was actually 40 years old.

20-year-old quits college in pursuit of dream

A 20-year-old student in Chengdu, Sichuan province, has quit college to pursue her dream of being an acupuncturist.

Jiang Bingxin came to know of traditional Chinese needle therapy when her father was cured by a veteran acupuncturist in 2006.

Jiang then became an assistant to the acupuncturist, and learnt all she could from the veteran.

Jiang, a second-year English student, recently said goodbye to her college and enrolled in a traditional Chinese medicine school in Chengdu despite opposition from her parents.

Man who duped two officials goes on trial

A man accused of duping two government officials of 110,000 yuan ($16,440) recently stood trial in Chongqing municipality's Chengkou county court.

The accused, surnamed Ma, got the idea to loot officials after he bought a phone card, which allowed him to set the number that he wanted to flash on the receiver's phone.

Ma, who was heavily in debt, spent another 200 yuan to buy the local government phone book and phoned two local party chiefs, saying he was the secretary of a deputy county chief and urged them to wire some money to a bank account for official purposes.

The officials followed Ma's instruction, for the number that flashed on their cell phones was that of the county government office.

After being on the run for almost a year, Ma was arrested from Fengdu county, his hometown, in September.

The court is yet to deliver a verdict.

5 minors held for robbing 40 pharmacies in a month

Police in Shenyang, Liaoning province, on Tuesday nabbed five youths who allegedly robbed more than 40 local pharmacies for money to surf the Internet.

The accused, all minors, committed all the robberies in October.

Most of the time, they would enter drug stores late in the night and thrash the staff members before making off with the cash.

Following their arrest, the five teens told the police they were addicted to the Internet and needed money to visit Internet cafs, which was why they took to robbing.

74-year-old held for stealing 148 phones in one night

Police in Anshan, Liaoning province, recently arrested a 74-year-old man who allegedly stole 148 mobile phones in one night.

Zhao, a habitual thief, is accused of breaking into a mobile phone store and making off with 148 handsets valued at 160,000 yuan ($24,100) on Oct 23.

Family gets stuck on ferris wheel as operator snoozes

A family of three was stuck on a ferris wheel at a park in Yiwu, Zhejiang province, for nearly an hour on Sunday after the operator switched off the ride thinking no one was on it.

The couple and their 6-year-old daughter shouted for help but to no avail. They then had to phone the police, who arrived on the scene and woke up the sleeping operator.

The operator said he had no idea someone was riding the ferris wheel and switched it off to save electricity.

Myanmar woman escapes family that bought her

Police in Wenzhou, Zhejiang province, found a woman walking along an expressway and learnt she had just escaped from a local family that had bought her.

The woman is from Myanmar.

A man came to the police station to claim her, saying she was his wife and he had bought her from Yunnan province for 26,000 yuan ($3,900).

Considering the case was related to cross-border human trafficking, the woman was sent to the related police station in Yunnan.

Overburdened students claim right over elderly

Days after photographs of seven middle school students sitting in a bus while an old man was standing were posted online, students from across the country are claiming they are more tired than the elderly.

The photographs showing the seven students' indifference to an old man standing right beside them sparked wide criticism after they were posted on the Internet on Friday.

However, many students responded to the photographs, saying they lacked sleep because their homework keeps them awake till midnight and they have to wake up to get ready for school at 5 am.

They also said the weight of their schoolbags is no joke - a middle school student's bag weighs anywhere between 5 to 10 kg.

Woman returns 1.8m yuan mistakenly wired to her

A resident of Guangzhou, Guangdong province, recently returned a whopping sum of 1.8 million yuan ($271,240), which a stranger from Zhejiang province mistakenly wired to her bank account.

The woman, surnamed Feng, had been getting calls from a man surnamed Liu, who claimed to have remitted a huge sum to her account by mistake.

At first, Feng thought of it as a scam and chose to ignore it.

However, Feng realized what Liu had been saying was true after she checked her account.

She immediately phoned Liu and asked him to collect the sum from her. She refused to accept his 10,000-yuan reward for her deed.

Model medical student's tale touches, inspires mates

A student of Hainan Medical University has single-handedly taken care of his bed-ridden brother, nephew and niece ever since his parents died of cancer years ago.

Jiang Lushang's elder brother became bed-ridden a few years ago after a series of illnesses, prompting his wife to abandon him.

Jiang narrated his tale at a college meeting earlier this week.

He won a seat in Hainan Medical University on full scholarship.

Last year, he used his scholarship to relocate his brother and his nephew and niece to an apartment near the college so he could devote his time to them.

"If there is a dream job, doctor it has to be. I want to heal the wounded and rescue the dying, while consoling their desperate souls," Jiang said.
