Shougang Group founded in 1919 is a State-owned enterprise focusing on iron and steel industry and involves such industries as mining, engineering, electronics, construction, services and overseas trade.

There are several reasons why the company was asked to relocate from Beijing. With the capital aiming to become an international metropolis and a global sport center, there is an increasing pressure to reduce pollution.

While Shougang ranks top in environmental protection among iron and steel industries nationwide, Beijing's peculiar position as capital city means it cannot continue to house iron and steel industry.

The relocation of Shougang Group, an eight million tons capacity iron and steel enterprise, is an unprecedented challenge. This is a complicated project involving nation, region, enterprise and staff's profits. The current production should continue at same level as production of iron and steel in Beijing is reduced. Apart from that, the project includes the employment of extra staff and the construction of new steel factories. All this should continue simultaneously.

The main production of iron and steel in Shijingshan in Beijing district stopped officially on January 13, 2011. The former site of the main process has been turned into an industrial park.
